Frequently Asked Questions

Who uses counselling?

Anyone who needs some help in solving life's problems

How much does it cost?

Counselling for individuals is £45 for one-hour session paid at the end of each session. Relationship Coaching for individuals is £50 and for £65 for couples paid in advance, by cash or cheque. If your employer or company scheme is paying, we will invoice them.

What is a company scheme?

Many employers provide a counselling service. It helps them to discharge their duty of care. Many workers who have counselling also need less sick leave. Some employers will pay an individual counsellor directly. Others have an Employee Assistance Programme whereby they buy in an external service who then provides someone like us. You need to speak to your Human Resources department to find out if there is such a scheme.

How does counselling work?

Your counsellor will not tell you what to do - only you can decide that. Your counsellor's role is to listen carefully and help you to make sense of your situation. She will ask you questions to help you to clarify your situation. She may use her skill to help you to understand why people behave in certain ways. She may help you to set goals and decide on helpful courses of action. At all times, you are in charge. The counsellor is your professional partner. About Us.

How may sessions do I need to have?

As many as you feel you need. Your counsellor will discuss this with you at the first session. Most people have four to six sessions, but there is no hard and fast rule.

Is it confidential?

Yes. Everything you say to your counsellor is confidential. The only exception is if you or someone else might come to harm.

Is counselling safe?

Yes. Alan and Grace are both Accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. This means that they have passed through a rigorous examination of their training, expertise and experience. They carry Professional Indemnity Insurance with cover of two million pounds. They are used by local government, public services, companies and individuals. They have monthly Professional Supervision.

Does counselling work?

Yes. Research by the EAPA shows that counselling helps people to return to work earlier and feel better than if they didn't use it.

My GP says I need anti-depressants. Does that mean I can't have counselling?

No. We see many people who are taking anti-depressants. They can help people to feel better. Counselling can work as well as drugs or instead of them. Talk to your counsellor about this at your first session.

Someone at work said counselling was for weak people. Is this true?

Definitely not. Counselling is for people who have the courage to face their problems and to seek help when they need it.
